Dieter Krause wurde 1947 in Berlin geboren und lebt dort. Er studierte an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Philosophie. Danach arbeitete er als Redakteur bei der Berliner Zeitung. In dieser Zeit bildete er mit ehemaligen Kommilitonen eine konspirative Oppositionsgruppe. Nach deren Zerschlagung durch die Stasi endete auch seine Zeitungstätigkeit. Einige Jahre später arbeitete er am Institut für Soziologie der Humboldt-Universität, anschließend kurzzeitig als Redaktionsleiter der Zeitung Die Andere vom Neuen Forum und ab Sommer 1990 über zwanzig Jahre im Berliner Büro des Stern.
