Nacido en La Unión, Departamento de Nariño (Colombia), el 18 de enero de 1953. Recibió su educación primaria en la escuela No 1 Santo Tomás de Aquino de este municipio. Continuó sus estudios secundarios en el Seminario Conciliar de Popayán, luego obtuvo el título de Bachiller del Colegio Nacional Juanambú de La Unión, realizó sus estudios superiores en la Universidad de Nariño de Pasto, institución en la que obtuvo el título de Ingeniero Agrónomo. Ejerció la profesión como asistente técnico e investigador hasta vincularse a la docencia en el año 1994. Fué docente catedrático de la Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia de Pasto y es autor del libro Educación por Competencias en Entornos Indígenas y Campesinos, con el cual en conjunto con la Institución Educativa del Resguardo Indígena de Poblazón fueron distinguidos como ganadores en el programa Ondas-Colciencias-Universidad del Cauca, en octubre de 2014.
