Hannah Farnham Sawyer Lee (1780–1865) was an American writer and novelist, best known for her 1837 novel, “Rich Enough a tale of the times”. Born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, Lee was the daughter of Jonathan Sawyer, an eminent physician, and had the privilege of access to an extensive library which nurtured her early love for literature. Her literary style is characterized by a sincere reflection on the social norms and human values of her time, often weaving nuanced socio-economic commentaries into her narratives [1]. Lee”s work was informed by the contemporary issues of the 19th century, and “Rich Enough” is considered a societal critique, scrutinizing the concept of wealth and personal fulfillment within the changing American landscape. Her prose is marked by its lucidity and moral instruction, a testament to the didactic tradition prevalent during the period [2]. Besides literature, Lee was engaged in the promotion of female education and charity work, which further influenced her writing. Though not as widely known today, Lee”s contributions to American literature and her engagement with pressing issues of her era were significant and remain of interest to scholars studying the intersection of gender, economics, and culture in early American fiction [3].
