Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (1737–1814) was a French writer and botanist, known for his contributions to Romantic literature and his interdisciplinary approach intertwining nature with human emotion. His most celebrated work, “Paul et Virginie” (1788), translated as “Paul and Virginia from the French of J.B.H. de Saint Pierre”, is a novel that epitomizes the ideal of noble savagery and the idea of returning to nature. It tells the tragic story of two young lovers growing up in Mauritius, which appealed to the sensibilities of Europeans during the Enlightenment period, offering a stark contrast to the artificialities of European society through its bucolic themes and pastoral setting.
