Isaac Barrow (1630–1677) was an English Christian theologian, and mathematician who is particularly remembered for his role as the mentor to Isaac Newton. Barrow”s reputation as a scholar is underpinned by his contributions to the fields of geometry and calculus, while his religious works, particularly his “Sermons on Evil-Speaking”, have also been well received for their articulate expression and moral integrity. Born in London, Barrow was educated at the Charterhouse and subsequently at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he would later become a fellow. His prowess in the study of classics and mathematics saw him appointed to the Regius Professorship of Greek at Cambridge, and later to the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics. Although he published relatively few works in his lifetime, his sermons and theological treatises displayed a commitment to intellectual rigor and an understanding of moral philosophy which would influence the discourse of the late-17th century Church of England. In “Sermons on Evil-Speaking”, Barrow addressed the ethical implications of slander and gossip, advocating for a Christian ethos of honesty and restraint in language. His literary style, systematic and clear, reinforced the gravity of his subject matter, and remains a source of interest for theologians and historians alike. Scholars regard Barrow not only for his own contributions but also for his significant influence on Newton, whom he instructed in mathematics. Posthumous publications of his geometric teachings in “Lectiones Mathematicae” and his exegetical work in “Lectiones Opticae” further cement Barrow”s stature as a formative figure in both the religious and scientific dialogues of his time.
