Sir Jagadis Chandra Bose, born on November 30, 1858, in Mymensingh, Bengal Presidency (now in Bangladesh), was a polymath whose research traversed multiple disciplines including physics, botany, and early wireless communication. Graduating from the University of Cambridge, he returned to India to delve into scientific research. An eminent figure in the world of plant physiology, his seminal work, “Response in the Living and Non-Living” (1902), highlights his pioneering research on the electrical responses of living tissues, which challenged the contemporary notion of strict boundaries between animate and inanimate matter. He developed instruments of exceptional sensitivity, such as the crescograph, which magnified the growth of plants, paving the path for future biophysical studies. His literary style is marked by the meticulous presentation of his experiments, rooted in rigorous scientific inquiry, while simultaneously being accessible to a wider intellectual audience. Bose was knighted in 1917 and is revered as a father of radio science and a visionary in the field of biophysics. He passed away on November 23, 1937, leaving behind a legacy of interdisciplinary exploration that continues to inspire scholars across the globe.
