Sir John Franklin ( 1786-1847), britischer Marineoffizier, Kolonialbeamter und Arktisforscher. Er führte mehrere Expeditionen in arktische Gefilde, bis er auf der Suche nach einer Nordwestpassage für immer im Eis verschwand. Der Herausgeber: Detlef Brennecke (geboren 1944) war in seiner Jugend Filmschauspieler in Berlin. Später lehrte er als Professor für Skandinavistik in Frankfurt am Main. Seine zahlreichen Bücher über Abenteurer und Entdecker wurden in etliche Sprachen übersetzt.
