Joyce Johnson (* 1935) arbeitete als Lektorin und schrieb vier Romane. Ihre journalistischen Arbeiten erschienen im New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Harper”s und The New York Magazine. Ihr Debüt “Come and Join the Dance” gilt als erster weiblicher Beat-Roman. Für »Zaunköniginnen”, ihre Erinnerungen an die Anfänge als Schriftstellerin, erhielt sie 1983 den »National Books Critic Award”. Doch berühmt wurde sie – zu ihrem eigenen Missfallen – als Kerouacs Geliebte. Die beiden waren von 1957 bis 1958 ein Paar.
