Steve Hamilton, geboren 1961 in Detroit, studierte an der University of Michigan kreatives Schreiben. Bereits an der Universität wurde er mit einem Preis ausgezeichnet. Seitdem hat er zahlreiche Romane verfasst, zehn davon in der Serie um den Ermittler Alex Mc Knight. Für seine Werke erhielt er eine Vielzahl an Preisen. Neben Ross Thomas ist er der einzige Autor, der jemals den Edgar Award, den renommiertesten US-Krimi-Preis, sowohl für das beste Debüt als auch für den besten Roman gewonnen hat. Mit seiner Familie lebt er in dem kleinen Ort Cottekill, etwa hundertfünfzig Kilometer nördlich von New York City.
