One of the most famous stories in the collection is ‘The Signal-Man’, which tells the tale of a haunted signalman who receives ghostly warnings before each railway accident. The story is based on the real-life Clayton Tunnel rail crash, which occurred in 1861. The collection also includes a story inspired by an incident in which Dickens was mistreated in a railway refreshment room, resulting in a scathing attack on such establishments in chapter three.
