Jack Kerouac (1922-1969) war einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der Beat Generation. Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) und Jack Kerouac lernten sich 1944 an der Columbia University kennen. Ginsbergs Hauptwerk ist das lange Gedicht »Howl«, das 1956 veröffentlicht wurde und wegen seiner obszönen Sprache einen Skandal auslöste.
