Bevor er begann, über das Segeln zu schreiben, lebte und arbeitete James L. Nelson sechs Jahre lang an Bord traditioneller Segelschiffe. Seine zahlreichen Sachbücher und Romane wurden mehrfach ausgezeichnet, unter anderem mit Preisen der American Library Association. Nelson liest in ganz Amerika aus seinen Büchern und erscheint regelmäßig im Fernsehen. Er lebt mit seiner Frau Lisa und den gemeinsamen Kindern in Harpswell, Maine.
