Mary Butts va néixer a Dorset el 1890. Va viure a Anglaterra, França i Itàlia, amb una agitada vida personal. Va relacionar-se amb grans intel·lectuals i artistes del seu temps, com T. S. Eliot, Jean Cocteau, Ford Maddox Ford, Ezra Pound, Virginia Woolf o l”ocultista Aleister Crowley. La seva obra està formada per novel·les, relats, poemes, assaigs i diaris, sempre amb un caràcter experimental i avançat, però després de la seva mort prematura el 1937 va caure en l”oblit, fins que a finals del segle xx va tornar a ser publicada i valorada.
