Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The subject matter contained in this book was. Sug gested by a short story appearing in the Cosmopolitan of March, 1903, entitled The Breed of the West, by J. N. Marchand. The whole of that story, with a few embellish ments, is embodied within the first ten pages, and I hereby acknowledge my indebtedness for the privilege, as well as the personal good wishes of the author thereof. My one object has been to weave a few ideas into a simple story, told in a manner that may be easily under stood.
