This book is a great work of high ideological and artistic levels. According to the ideological tendency reflected in Annotated Series of Chinese Classic Novels: A Dream in Red Mansions (a set of 2 Volumes) written by Cao Xueqin and Gao E, the authors had had preliminary democratic thoughts. They made an acute criticism on the darkness of the realistic society including the court and officialdom, the decay of the feudal aristocracy and their families, the feudal imperial examination system, marriage system, servant system, hierarchy system, and the corresponding social ruling thoughts, namely the doctrine of Confucius and Mencius, the Neo-Confucianism and the social moral ideas, and put forward vague ideals and propositions with preliminary democratic nature. These ideals and propositions are the tortuous reflection of the growing factors of capitalist economy in embryo at that time.
