He then asks Illmarinen, the master forger, to be the one to create the Sampo. Illmarinen travels to the north and builds a forge and begins his task. After much trial and error and recasting, the Sampo is eventually created and is described as “From one side it grinds out flour, and from the other salt, and from the third it produces coins out money.
