A Pledge written and compiled by A Yuan is a story about a man falling in love with a woman, which is no different from most other love stories. When writing love stories, writers would naturally conform to conventional patterns, such as monotonous falling in love at first sight and monotonous signs. The author said "a man fell in love with a woman is a wonderful process which is more beautiful than the first blooming of confederate rose and more beautiful than the dancing snow. I cannot be tired of watching it all my life." In the form of trilogy, A Pledge narrates the emotional stories between three couples of intellectuals: Meng Yu and Zhu Zhu, Tang Misheng and Ji Yuan, Meng Yu and Ji Yuan. They are all "exquisite egoists" who have received higher love education, so these are just a few "fake love" stories. The novel is named A Pledge, which is an irony to "reveal the sufferings of illness and arouse the attention of healing". It can also be regarded as giving an ancient prescription.
