It is a history of the struggle of pursuing gold from generation to generation and a history of gold fables. The novel completely and truly reproduces the whole process of a gold mine from discovery to prosperity, to decline, to disappearance. Shuimen Village in the novel experienced a feast of gold and a catastrophe of gold. All the people in Shuimen Village were involved in the battle for gold. Since they did not know how to protect themselves, many people suffered from silicosis in the process of gold mining and died in pain. Then, Shuimen Village became a village of widows. Although gold rushers are gone, gold is still rampant in the world.
