The poetry in Han Dynasty, for roughly 400 years, made considerable progress in the aspect of the group of authors, the style of poetry, and the way of language expression. It continued to develop based on The Book of Songs, the poetry of the Chu-Qin dynasties, and Han folk songs. It experienced a wide variety of genres, ranging from folk ballads to literati creations, from Yuefu songs to literary poems (poems not intended for performance), from four-character to five-character, from Sao style to seven-character style, and from narrative to lyric poetry.
