Modern western medicine has been in China for more than 200 years. This book takes people and events related to the first century (from the early 19th century to the early 20th century) as the object for discussion and uses the first-hand historical materials, such as letters, archives and reports of doctors of western medicine coming to China Chinese people learning western medicine, as the main basis of the discussion. There are much content that was not covered by predecessors, not completely correct or even wrong. There are ten articles in this book. They are mainly about the activities of Christian missionaries. It pays attention to the reaction of Chinese people to western medicine, records the life and practice of Chinese people who studied western medicine in the 19th century, such as the first Chinese doctor of medicine studying in Britain, Huang Kuna, the first Chinese doctor of western medicine in Shanghai, Huang Chunfu, as well as some Chinese doctors of western medicine who were apprentices, discusses the process of their medical practice, their career after their completion, and their difficulties including cultural adaptation; at the same time, it notices Chinese people”s attitude and behaviors towards western medicine and tries to observe various phenomena and implications interwoven by people and things in the process of Western medicine coming to China from the perspective of interaction between the giver and the receiver.
