This work can be considered the fictional autobiography of the nineteenth-century writer who is its author; many of the novel's elements are inspired by events of Dickens' own life. The work reflects the misery experienced during the industrial revolution, when the exploitation of women and children in factories was widespread, retracing the life of the protagonist David, from childhood to maturity.
