Jane Addams (1860-1935) was a notable American activist and figure in the history of social work and women’s suffrage. She was an advocate for world peace and was the first women to be awarded an honorary degree from Yale University. She co-founded the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and in 1931 became the first American woman to be award the Nobel Peace Prize. Emily Greene Balch (1867-1961) was an American economist, sociologist and pacifist. She became the central leader of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) for which she won the Novel Peace Prize in 1946. Alice Hamilton (1869-1970) was an American physician and leading expert in the field of occupational health. She became the first women appointed to the faculty of Harvard University. She was a recipient of numerous honors and awards, most notably the Albert Lasker Public Service Award.
