About the author

George Sand (1804-1876), born Amantine Aurore Lucile Dupin, wrote nearly sixty novels, many featuring strong female characters. Her own strength and sexuality helped confirm her reputation as the most eminent female French writer of her time. However, she eventually became better known for her affairs and breaking social norms than her writing.
