Anna Karenina is a novel about Anna, her marriage to Karenin, a high-ranking government minister, and her affair with Vronsky, a wealthy and charismatic military officer. It is considered one of the finest novels ever written. This improbable and destructive triangle is set against the courtship and marriage of Levin, a depressed landowner, and Kitty, a lovely young woman who was also first pursued by Vronsky. While Anna seeks happiness through love, defying Russian social conventions by abandoning her husband and son to live with her lover, which leads to her being condemned and ostracised by her peers and to jealous fits that alienate Vronsky, Levin pursues spiritual fulfilment through marriage, family, and hard work.
