John Gay (1685–1732) was an English poet and dramatist, chiefly known for his contribution to satirical works and fables. Born in Devon to a family of modest means, Gay’s literary aspirations eventually led him to London, where he mixed with influential writers such as Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift, becoming a prominent member of the Scriblerus Club.
