He later wrote several books, including bestsellers: “The House of a Thousand Candles” (1906), “The Port of Missing Men” (1907), and “A Hoosier Chronicle” (1912). In 1928 he began a career in politics, first as a city councilman and later as a diplomat in South America, appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
