Paul McAuley, 1955 im englischen Stroud geboren, arbeitete mehrere Jahre als Dozent für Botanik an der St. Andrews University, bevor er beschloss, sich ganz dem Schreiben zu widmen. 1988 veröffentlichte er seinen ersten Roman, Vierhundert Millionen Sterne, und gewann damit den Philip K. Dick Award. Neben Space Operas, die in der fernen Zukunft angesiedelt sind, befasst er sich in seinen Büchern unter anderem mit Themen wie Nanotechnologien, Biotechnologie und alternativer Geschichte. Er gilt als eine der herausragendsten Stimmen der britischen Science Fiction, für seine Romane wurde er mehrfach mit internationalen Preisen ausgezeichnet. Paul McAuley lebt und arbeitet in London.
