Herman Cyril Mc Neile, better known by his pen name ‘Sapper, ‘ was an English author born on September 28, 1888, in Bodmin, Cornwall. Mc Neile’s service in the British army during World War I greatly influenced his writing, and he utilized his frontline experiences to infuse authenticity into his stories. After the war, Mc Neile turned to writing, quickly gaining popularity for his mystery and adventure novels featuring the character Bulldog Drummond, a demobilized officer who becomes a detective. This character epitomized the stoic, stiff-upper-lip British hero and became a prototype for subsequent thriller protagonists. Mc Neile published numerous books under the name ‘Sapper, ‘ including the ‘Mystery & Crime Collection, ‘ which showcases his concise, punchy narrative style and his mastery of suspense.
