Mary Wilder Tileston (1843-1934) was an accomplished editor of devotional Christian texts. Tileston and her family were intimately involved in the literary, artistic and religious establishment of the United States. She was raised among writers, philosophers, poets and educators like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and the Peabody sisters. Tileston was a profoundly religious woman who possessed an in-depth understanding of the Bible, the Apocrypha and the works of Catholic Fathers. Her literary skills were learned from her father, Caleb Foote, who owned and edited the Salem Gazette. Although Daily Strength for Daily Needs was her most famous work, she compiled and edited over twenty-five books. Her other texts included Quiet Hours (1874), Prayers Ancient and Modern (1897) and Joy and Strength for the Pilgrim”s Day (1901).
