Cover of William James: Psychology (Barnes & Noble Digital Library) (ePUB)

Psychology is a rich blend of physiology, psychology, philosophy and personal reflection. It introduces the powerful concept of “stream of thought.” James’s landmark work also contains seeds of pragmatism and phenomenology, which have influenced generations of thinkers. This study did much to place psychology among the laboratory sciences based on experimental method.

About the author

William James (1842-1910) was the elder brother of the novelist Henry James and a key figure in American philosophy and psychology.  His best known and most influential work, still quite readable today, is The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902), which approaches the subject of religion from a scientific, psychological—yet refreshingly open-minded—standpoint.
