Janet Bumpus takes a job as the secretary to the boss at Chippering Mills, only to have him fall in love and seduce her. But once she sees him for who he really is, she turns against him and his business practices, which mistreat the workers. Churchill offers an unvarnished look at mill life and the radicalism that rose up in defense of labor.
