Homer (VIII wiek p.n.e.) – pierwszy znany z imienia europejski poeta; pieśniarz, wędrowny śpiewak, recytator, twórca ustnej poezji heroicznej. Stałe elementy konwencji jego utworów określane są mianem stylu homeryckiego. Pochodził z Grecji, ale nie rozstrzygnięto ostatecznie, z którego miasta. W różnych częściach państwa stawiano mu posągi i świątynie. Według legendy miał być ślepcem. Właściwie każdy element jego biografii pozostaje do dziś kwestią sporną, niektórzy badacze podważają nawet jego istnienie.
