Emma is a novel by the English writer Jane Austen, first published anonymously in 1815. The fundamental theme of the novel is the misunderstanding in love. The protagonist Emma Woodhouse is described in the opening paragraph of the book as beautiful, intelligent and rich. Before starting to write the book, Austen will write: "I'm going to describe a heroine who will be liked by no one but myself."
