First Draft of the Chronicle of Mr. Zhao Wanli”s Life 

Zhao Wanli (1905 – 1980) styles himself Feiyun. He is nicknamed Yun”an and Shun”an. He is from Haining, Zhejiang Province. He is a famous philologist and Dunhuang scholar, and is especially good at the science of edition and bibliography. Mr. Zhao Wanli learned after the well-known scholar, Wang Guowei, and devoted his whole life to the literature arrangement and librarianship. He has a lot of works and cultivated a large number of talents in the science of literature and library. Mr. Zhao Wanli is a well-educated and energetic scholar. He looked over more than 300, 000 rare books. Besides library affairs, he presided over many ancient book collation projects which are represented by Zhaocheng Tripitaka and The Yongle Canon. Catalogue of Rare Books in Beijing Library and Catalogue of Chinese Engraving compiled by him are all indispensable books for philologists. He is honored as an important leading figure in the history of protecting and collating Chinese ancient books, which is not overpraise at all. Now, Mr. Liu Bo of the National Library, accumulated many years” efforts to write The First Draft of the Chronicle of Mr. Zhao Wanli”s Life which is rich in content and detailed in textual research. It is not only the only comprehensive biography of Mr. Zhao Wanli up to now, but also an important material of academic history. It is now published for readers.
