Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751–1816) was an Irish satirist, a playwright, and poet, best remembered for his contribution to the English stage with his witty comedies of manners. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Sheridan moved to England in his early youth. After a brief stint at Harrow School, Sheridan eventually settled in Bath, where he would begin his lifelong involvement with the theatre. Though he authored several works, his most enduring play, ‘The Rivals’ (1775), has secured his reputation as one of the leading playwrights of the 18th century.
