The protagonist "I" in the book is a talented writer in London. He met a securities broker by chance. When he reached middle age, the other side suddenly responded to his inner call and gave up everything. Firstly, he went to Paris, then to Tahiti in the South Pacific Ocean to live with the aborigines. He devoted himself to painting and became famous after his death. After he became famous, "I" began to trace back to his life experience after his contact with artists and the other side. The story of the artist is based on the life of Gauguin, a French post impressionist painter, who was extremely depressed and prepared for mourning.
