Axel Munthe wurde 1857 als Sohn eines Apothekers im schwedischen Oskarshamn geboren. Er studierte Medizin in Uppsala und Paris und praktizierte als Arzt in Paris, Rom, Stockholm und anderen europäischen Städten. Seit 1908 war Munthe Leibarzt der schwedischen Königin Viktoria. 1929 erschienenen seine Erinnerungen, in deren Mittelpunkt seine Villa in Anacapri stand, die ihn weltbekannt machten. Sie waren 1962 Grundlage zu dem erfolgreichen Film Axel Munthe ? Der Arzt von San Michele. Axel Munthe erblindete im späteren Leben und starb am 11. Februar 1949 in einem Seitenflügel des königlichen Schlosses in Stockholm, wo er schon seit Jahren als Gast König Gustavs gelebt hatte.
