Dorothy B. Hughes, geboren 1904 in Kansas City, studierte Journalismus. 1931 veröffentlichte sie ihren ersten Gedichtband, ab den Vierzigerjahren schrieb sie Romane, für die sie mehrfach ausgezeichnet wurde. Ihr Roman ›Ein einsamer Ort‹ wurde 1950 mit Humphrey Bogart verfilmt. Für ihr Lebenswerk erhielt sie 1978 den Grand Master Award der Edgar Allan Poe Awards. Dorothy B. Hughes starb 1993.
