Emmanuel Lévinas nació en Kaunas (Lituania) en 1906. Estudió filosofía en Estrasburgo (1923-1930) y en Friburgo (1928-1929) con Husserl y Heidegger. Se nacionalizó francés en 1930 y ha sido profesor de filosofía en las Universidades de Poitiers, Paris-Nanterre y la Sorbona. Entre sus obras destacan Totalité et Infini (1961), Difficile Liberté (1963), Noms propres (1974), Le Temps et l“Autre (1979), De Dieu qui vient à l“idée (1982), así como sus estudios sobre Husserl, Heidegger, Maurice Blanchot o sus lecturas de textos talmúdicos.
