Gavin Francis, 1975 in Fife in Schottland geboren, ist praktizierender Arzt und zugleich Weltreisender und Reiseschriftsteller. Nach seiner Approbation arbeitete er in Afrika und Indien und erkundete auf ausgedehnten Reisen alle Kontinente. Sein Buch »Empire Antarctica«, 2013 mit dem Scottish Book Award ausgezeichnet und im DuMont Reiseverlag auf Deutsch erschienen, dokumentiert seine Zeit als Arzt in einer britischen Forschungsstation in der Antarktis. Im vorliegenden Band »Dem Nordpol entgegen« beschreibt er seine Expeditionen in die europäische Arktis.
