Gavin Maxwell, geboren 1914, war ein schottischer Schriftsteller, leidenschaftlicher Naturforscher und Naturschützer. Von adeliger Herkunft war Maxwell als Ausbilder für den britischen Nachrichtendienst tätig, betrieb u.a. eine Haifischjagd und bereiste als Abenteurer die Welt. Später lebte er zurückgezogen an der schottischen Nordwestküste, wo er sein Werk Ring of Bright Water verfasste, 1960 ein weltweiter Bestseller, über sein Leben mit Fischottern, die er großzog. Maxwell verstarb 1969 in Inverness.
