Gene Wolfe wurde 1931 in New York City geboren. Schon während seiner Studienzeit veröffentlichte er seine erste Fantasy- und Science-Fiction-Geschichten. Doch er dauerte noch, bis er sich hauptberuflich dem Schreiben widmete: Jahrelang arbeitete er als Ingenieur und entwarf unter anderem die Maschine, die Pringles-Chips ihre Form gibt. Vor allem mit seinem Zyklus „Das Buch der Neuen Sonne“ erlangte Gene Wolfe große Bekanntheit; die einzelnen Romane wurden mehrfach ausgezeichnet. Wolfe lebt in Peoria, Illinois.
