Jacqueline Lévi-Valensi (1932–2004) was professor emeritus and dean of literature at University de Picardie, in Amiens, and France“s leading scholar on Camus. David Carroll is professor emeritus of French at the University of California, Irvine. His books include French Literary Fascism (Princeton). Arthur Goldhammer has translated more than ninety books from the French. In 1996 he was named Chevalier de l“Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture.
