Karel Čapek (1890-1938) ist einer der wichtigsten tschechischen Schriftsteller des 20. Jahrhunderts. Nach einem Philosophiestudium in Prag, Berlin und Paris arbeitete er als Journalist, später als Dramaturg.
Sein erstes Theaterstück (R.U.R.) wurde 1920 aufgeführt, es folgten Detektivgeschichten, Romane, Reisebeschreibungen, Märchen und weitere Schauspiele.
Čapek hat früh vor der Bedrohung durch Faschismus und Nationalismus gewarnt, der Gestapo galt er als Staatsfeind Nummer 2.
