Sophie Jewett (1861–1909) was an American poet and educator, who wrote under her own name and the pseudonym Ellen Burroughs. Born in Moravia, New York, Jewett was profoundly influenced by English literature, particularly the pastoral and religious traditions. After the death of her father, her family moved to Buffalo, where she later attended Buffalo Female Academy. Jewett“s scholarly path led her to Wellesley College as both a student and educator, eventually becoming an English literature professor. Her passion for medieval literature is evident in her poetic works, which often feature rich imagery and themes of spirituality and nature, reminiscent of the pre-Raphaelite movement. Jewett“s oeuvre includes several collections of poetry and translations, such as „The Pilgrim, and Other Poems“ (1896) and „The Pearl“ (1908), the latter being a translation of a 14th-century allegorical poem. Her literary style is characterized by its lyricism and attention to form, maintaining a delicate balance between aesthetic and intellectual elements. Jewett“s contributions to literature also include critical examinations of English poets and her work in educating young women in the arts and letters at a time when women“s academic pursuits were frequently undervalued. Her lyrical voice and scholarly achievements secured her a modest but respected place in the American literary canon of the early 20th century.
