Wangari Maathai wurde 1940 in Nyeri, Kenia, geboren. Sie studierte Biologie in den USA und Deutschland und gründete 1977 das Aufforstungsprojekt Green Belt Movement. Sie ist Gründerin der Green Party of Kenya. Im Jahr 2002 wurde sie bei den ersten freien Wahlen Kenias ins Parlament gewählt, seit 2003 ist sie stellvertretende Ministerin für Umwelt. 2004 wurde sie mit dem Friedensnobelpreis geehrt. Wangari Maathai ist im September 2011 in Nairobi gestorben.
