Additionally, they collaborate in an unsuccessful effort to stop Charles, King of England, from being executed. By kidnapping Mazarin, the Musketeers are able to persuade him to accept the demands made by the citizens of Paris, bringing about peace in the city. However, the four companions are able to outsmart Mordaunt, and the fiend is ultimately put to death by Athos as he attempts to drown Athos. While Porthos receives the coveted title of baron, D'Artagnan receives a financial allowance and the rank of captain. Raoul, the son of Athos, is appointed to a regiment in the army, and Aramis is able to secure honors for a woman he knows.
