Yellow River Beach is a wonderful novel with clear voice and legend under the banner of the main melody. In the first half of the 20th century, the major historical events happened in the middle reaches of the Yellow River and on both sides of the river were all included in the novel. The complex character pedigree and numerous events constitute a huge pattern of the novel. The novel tells many wonderful stories in the south of Shanxi Province, in which there are sharp contradictions between the poor peasants and the local tyrants and evil gentry; there are fierce struggles between the Red Army of workers and peasants and Chiang Kai Shek»s encirclement and suppression army; there are frequent confrontations among the Eighth Route Army, the death squads, the Jin Sui army, the guerrillas, the Yellow River Beach Bandits and the Japanese devils; there are deadly duels between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party; there are intrigues among the new army warlords of the Kuomintang, as well as the cooperation and friction between Yan Xishan»s Jin Sui army and the Eighth Route Army, which can be described as the history and memoir of the revolutionary struggle in Fennan area. The protagonist Huang Hanbing is not only a witness but also a participant of these historical events. His love, hate, joy and sorrow are interwoven with those stories, and he has cultivated a strong will and unremitting revolutionary passion in the war. Based on the middle reaches of the Yellow River, Cui Zhenglai narrates vertically and horizontally in a way of combination of admiration. Besides the historical reality, he records in detail the people»s far and long emotions and the life language of bitterness and happiness which are beating and hustling in the Yellow River beach.
