Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846–1916) was a master of Polish literature, whose work has enthralled readers for over a century. Born in Wola Okrzejska, in what was then Russian-controlled Poland, Sienkiewicz was educated in Warsaw and developed a deep sense of patriotism that later suffused his writing. He embarked on a career in journalism, which proved a springboard for his literary aspirations. Sienkiewicz’s magnum opus is undoubtedly the epic historical novel ‘With Fire and Sword’ (Ogniem i Mieczem, 1884), the first in his acclaimed Trilogy depicting 17th-century Polish history, teeming with heroic deeds and national turmoil.
