Herman Melville was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and poet. His first two books gained much attention, though they were not bestsellers, and his popularity declined precipitously only a few years later. Sobre el autor

Born in New York City in 1819. He worked as a crew member on several vessels beginning in 1839, his experiences spawning his successful early novels. Subsequent books, including his masterpiece Moby-Dick, sold poorly, and by the 1860s Melville had turned to poetry. Following his death in New York City in 1891, he posthumously came to be regarded as one of the great American writers.
